At Lynn Hall Park on Fort Myers Beach, Fort delivered more than 290 linear feet of dune walkovers for Lee County, along with washdown areas and their plumbing, and the dune grading and planting that restore the shoreline the structures cross. It was as much an environmental project as a construction project.
The challenge
Public access without sacrificing the dune
Dunes are Southwest Florida’s first line of storm defense, and the rules protecting them are strict for good reason. The assignment at Lynn Hall Park was to thread public access across that protected system at one of the busiest beach parks in Lee County: nearly the length of a football field in elevated walkovers, plus washdown stations with real plumbing, built in sand, salt air, and sun.
Our approach
Build the structures, restore the shoreline
Fort treated the dune as part of the scope rather than an obstacle to it. Alongside the walkover construction and washdown plumbing, the project included grading the dune profile and planting it, leaving the natural system stronger than the construction found it. For a county owner, that meant one contractor accountable for both the built work and the restoration.
The outcome
Delivered for Lee County in 2020
The walkovers, washdown areas, and restored dune were completed for Lee County in 2020. Together with the beach-end walkovers Fort built for the City of Naples, the project is part of a coastal access portfolio spanning both of Southwest Florida’s Gulf counties.
